Elementary East has been preparing leaders for life by introducing students to Stephen Covey’s 7 Habits of Leadership. Students have been learning the value of Habit #7 Sharpen the Saw. According to the Stephen Covey’s Parent’s Guide to The Leader in Me, Sharpen the Saw means to have balance in your life. There is a story of a man who was sawing down a tree and not making a lot of progress. When a passerby asked him why he didn’t stop sawing to sharpen his saw, he remarked that he was too busy sawing. Habit #7 reminds us that we are more productive when we are in balance- body, brain, heart and soul. Just like the four tires on a car, if one area is being ignored or overused, the rest will feel the results. For young children, the car analogy is one they understand; as a car could not go on fewer than all four tires. Explain the four parts of each person (body, brain, heart and soul) and how important it is to take care of each part to make them all work better.

Welcome to Branson Elementary East, where we work together with you to prepare all of our learners for life. Here at Branson Elementary East,we envision a school where the learning community unites to promote the success of every student and exemplifies effective leadership in all areas.

We set high expectations for the ones we serve as well as ourselves, and then strive every day to give each of our students the support they need to exceed those goals. We do this with a team approach – everyone is involved and accountable for the learning that takes place in the East building.

Four days a week, Monday through Thursday, we have built in an added layer of support for every level of learner. Each of our students are grouped and instructed specific to their needs. So if you enter our building between 2:50 and 3:35 on those days, you will see students grouped all over the building and everyone at work on targeted skills. Then twice a year, we celebrate students reaching their targeted growth. We are excited to report that 2011-12 was the 4th consecutive year we had approximately 90% of our students reach their goal in Reading or Math or both, and we hope to continue at least that level of success again this year. Students and staff in the East building are excited about learning every day. We feel that this intervention approach is one of the major reasons our students continue to show gains academically on our state achievement tests.

During the 2012-13 school year, we will also be focusing on the “Leader in Me” program, which is based on the 7 Habits by Stephen Covey. This approach helps us “grow” leaders, rather than just recognize leaders. Students are very excited about this process. They monitor their own progress by tracking their specific data, which could be academic or behavioral or both. Students learn life skills such as how to greet someone, how to shake hands, and look someone in the eye. Every student in the building will have a team and a job. Eventually, students will be running our Character Assemblies. This approach goes hand in hand with the PBS (Positive Behavior Support) program that we have implemented over the past 2 years.
